Protestant Urban Legends

I grew up with that one too; I think it comes from Protestants reading the documents in connection with the Reformation and assuming that nothing has changed in the Catholic Church for the past four centuries.

Mind you, there is a difference in emphasis in Catholicism. I remember when I looked at my Catholic roomate's Bible in college and was shocked to discover that it was littered with notes telling her the Catholic Church's interpretation of what she was reading. I've since figured out that she was reading a study Bible, but I think that Protestant study Bibles have less of an official feel to them (for good or for ill). I think it's probably true that the Catholic Church would not want its members to read the Bible unless they also received the Church's guidance as to what the biblical passages mean.
