It's absolutely disgusting how some Christians will say, "God loves you" at the very moment they're engaging in hateful behavior. (Whether the individual Christian is hateful or is simply deluding himself into believing he's being loving is hard for me judge.) C. S. Lewis said that he would rather fall into the hands of a robber baron than into the hands of a Christian inquisitor, because the baron's lust for pain may sate, but the inquisitor will have convinced himself that he is following God's will in torturing the person "for his own good." You see the same sort of problem with other people, like those idealistic Soviets who decided that the way to save the lower classes of the world was to start a Communist tyranny. The combination of idealism and destruction is always particularly deadly – Nazi Germany is another example – but it's particularly horrendous when the people who are causing the destruction start quoting from people who would have turned their face in shame to see how their words were being used. And ninety percent of the time – this is the most horrendous aspect of it – the destroyers don't realize that they've misused the text in any way. The Soviet Communist honestly thinks that he's being a true Marxist, the Nazi believes that he's being faithful to Wagner, and . . . Well, you see where I'm going. Myself, I take the view that such people are in the direst need of help, and I pray that their eyes will be opened. Heather |
