July 21, 1999 (David W. Cloud, Fundamental Baptist Information Service,
1701 Harns Rd., Oak Harbor, WA 98277) - Jimmy Allen, former president of
the Southern Baptist Convention, spoke on July 16 to the annual conference
of the Universal Fellowship of Metropolitan Community Churches in Los
Angeles, California. This is a homosexual group that claims to have 42,000
members in 15 countries. Allen was president of the SBC from 1971 to 1979.

Allen said that though he believes homosexual acts are "contrary to
biblical morality," he thinks God wanted him to be at the conference to
build bridges and promote dialogue. Allen met Metropolitan Community
Churches leader Troy Perry in 1998 at a conference sponsored by former
President Jimmy Carter, who also is a Southern Baptist and teaches Sunday
School in a SBC congregation in Plains, Georgia. One of Allen's two sons is
a homosexual and has the HIV virus. Also, the wife and two children by his
other sin died of the HIV virus because of a tainted blood transfusion.

We sympathize with Allen's loss, but the only message a faithful preacher
can give to a group of practicing homosexuals is "repent and turn from your
wicked sin and trust the blood of Jesus Christ for salvation." Any
homosexual can be saved by God's wonderful grace, but God requires the
homosexual (and the adulterer and the thief and the murderer, etc.) to turn
from his sin through the power of a regenerated life and the indwelling
Holy Spirit. The Bible says the born again Christian is a new creature in
Christ and "old things are passed away" (2 Cor. 5:21). There is a new
direction of life. When the Lord Jesus forgave the adulterous woman, he
instructed her, "Go, and sin no more" (John 8:11). Likewise, after Christ
healed the lame man at the pool of Bethesda,, He told him, "Behold, thou
art made whole: sin no more, lest a worse thing come unto thee" (John 5:14).

"Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be
not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor
effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, Nor thieves, nor
covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the
kingdom of God. And SUCH WERE SOME OF YOU: but ye are washed, but ye are
sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the
Spirit of our God" (1 Cor. 6:9-11).

God does not save people so they can continue in their wickedness (and
homosexuality is certainly wickedness before God); He saves them so they
can turn from it and live holy lives to His glory. The grace of Christ is
not a license to sin.

"For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men,
Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live
soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world; Looking for that
blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour
Jesus Christ; WHO GAVE HIMSELF FOR US, THAT HE MIGHT REDEEM US FROM ALL
INIQUITY, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works"
(Titus 2:11-14).
