In reply to Milton vs. Moses: Does Satan Exist? Submitted by Rue De La Levee on July 22 1999 at 20:51:51

. . . thanks to the ever-ready resources at the Ontario Consultants for Religious Tolerance. Just click below. All of your questions are answered there, but here's the brief version:

"Where in the Bible is Lucifer mentioned?"

In Isaiah, but most scholars think this is a misinterpretation of a passage that was meant to refer to the morning Venus (the evening Venus was at that time thought to be a separate planet).

"Is Satan ever actually mentioned as a single opposing force to God?"

A single opposing force? No; he's often depicted in the New Testament as being the head of the forces of evil. The terminology for him varies. Later Christian tradition (Milton et al.) described him as the foremost archangel who led an army of rebellion against God. There's a nifty description of him and his army in the Inferno.

"Where in the Bible is the idea of a Final War (so to speak) between God and The Forces of Evil?"

Primarily in Revelation, but Jesus (without making mention of Satan) refers to a time of opposition between good and evil at the end of the world.
