Hi Heather,

I agree the need to maintain decency in society is a rule of thumb to observe. My problem is that our society does not know what rules of propriety to follow. On the right we have those who would say a man hugging a child in a swimsuit is perverted, where men are sent to jail for kissing a child. I read articles about that every day. On the other side, sex has become a recreation, mairrage has become less a sacred institution, compromises are made, as inch by inch we move closer to a free for all society.

How many lines must be drawn? How many compromises must be made to balance propriety with chastecy? We live in a world that sets a different rule of propriety daily. I'm confused. The only constant I have is the Bible, and I read in it the love that is shared between people, friends, brothers, sisters, eachother. I'm not willing to change just because society says I'm acting in a manner they haven't decided what is decent or have debated over the centuries. And, yes, I do know what happend to a boy who kissed another in school. He was shamed, for one, now is a teacher, BL, and very happy in the life of both as he writes this today. Something to be said for an experience that motivates life changes.

I do not suggest negating the impotance of chastecy and the rules of propriety as they are used in educating children. Discussion of such issues helps them make the choices and to grow and make the right ones. CS Lewis was writing to an audience where change is given over one generation to the next, I wonder what he would say to an audience who changes anually, in views, knowlege, morality, and understanding. Although his wisdom speaks volumes to me, and you're right, this quote hit me like a ton of bricks. A wake-up call that maybe I've acting a little "uncharitably". Is it possible, though, to define propriety and chastecy together using the Bible only, and not soceity? What ever happened to the axiom that the Bible never goes out of date?

Blessings,
Oliver (who can't decide if he's vegetable, animal, or mineral)
