Dgennero -
Difficulties and tragedies such as the ones that you mentioned and some of the BL related ones that david mentioned are probably the number one reason why people refuse to believe in God. How can a great God let such horrible things happen to those that he created?

I wish I had a good answer for those who question this. God doesn't promise to keep everyone safe from the physical world that he has created for us to live in. He more or less allows us playing room within the world, so that we CAN make decisions which affect how our physical life will go. We can decide to get drunk and go driving, and in some cases we'll crash our car. We can decide to live too close to a contaminated water supply, and might get sick. And we can decide to live in an area that is prone to earthquakes. God doesn't always promise to deliver us from those choices and he RARELY will break physical laws for us (some claim that he never will after Jesus' resurrection).

I do believe though that God will deliver those who come to him and turn their lives to him, no matter how poor or disadvantaged they might be. That is why it is so important for us to be evangelical......it is in OUR hands to spread the gospel. God works in mysterious ways sometimes, and it may take a while for us to realize why he runs things in a particular way.
Ecclesiastes 3

1There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven:
2a time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot,
3a time to kill and a time to heal, a time to tear down and a time to build,
4a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance,
5a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them, a time to embrace and a time to refrain,
6a time to search and a time to give up, a time to keep and a time to throw away,
7a time to tear and a time to mend, a time to be silent and a time to speak,
8a time to love and a time to hate, a time for war and a time for peace.
