"What I mean by this is did you ever, with all of your heart, have an adult (or adult-enough) understanding of what it means to be a Christian AND buy into it?"

I'm not sure what you mean by "adult enough", but I did have a sincere belief in God.. and when you say "buy into it", I would have to say that I believed much, but saw holes, if you know what I mean..

The influence of a completed university education in the natural sciences i.e., biology, chemistry, and physics, caused me to have many questions about what was being professed by Christians..

I was also influenced by a very close friend and mentor who is perhaps among the greatest pragmatists I have every known.. he is an atheist, however, he did not turn me into an atheist, I draw my own conclusions..

Adding to the mix the hypocrisy amongst the followers who were preaching the word.. well, if you've ever experienced a room full of Pentecostals all shrieking in tongues at the same time, it is something spooky you won't forget..

My experiences in life taught me to open up and consider ALL of the possibilities and my 'current' conclusions place me in the skeptical camp..

If other Christians would open up, they may find the same inner strength they derive from their zealous belief in the supernatural..

'd', I'm glad you are exploring yourself and the word you so cherish.. I hope you will find peace where you light..

honesty.. 'I' have..
