A difficult balance

I originally envisioned CBF as a friendly support forum. I was not interested in the arguing that often went on at BC and RDC. It set a tone that I wanted to get away from. It seemed reasonable that those who wanted to debate could go to RDC, and those who wanted support could go to CBF. There is the fear that arguing at CBF would create a tone that would send away many people who need support, especially since they already sense enough antagonism from society.

However, it is obviously very helpful for those of us at CBF to discuss different points of view, especially those related to living responsible lives as BLers. It is possible to debate in a way that the supportive atmosphere is not lost.

What does a webmaster do when the debate becomes insulting? It is difficult to know where to draw the line. How much or what kind of arguing can people who want support put up with? How helpful is it to the debaters and the listeners to allow the former to be less than tactful?

I think Bach has done an excellent job trying to balance the two functions of support and discussing opposing views. It is an extraordinarily difficult task.
