Brian -
I'm so encouraged that you are seeing your purpose in life a bit differently now. I can relate so well to this statement that you made:

I have always lived in such a way that I could literally drop whatever I am doing and go to help or aid a friend.

I have also been that way, always willing to be on the move, not tied down to anything which would hinder me from serving a greater purpose. It reminds me a bit of going to the beach as a BL. Most people that I know go to the beach with lots of chairs and balls, food and blankets. They lay out on the beach and are more or less tied to their 'area'. I have always gone to the beach with a small fanny pack full of some cash, my car keys and some extra film for my camera (after all, you NEVER want to get caught on the beach unable to catch that next cute moment :->) I walk the beach for miles, and am never tied down to one spot. After all, if I happen to meet a cute 12 year old who wants to go run up the beach, or go further down to kick a soccer ball with his friends, I've got to be sure that I can go anywhere I want to do. That same attitude has prevailed in most of my life. If you look at the attitude of the apostles, they too were willing to give up anything in a moment's notice to follow Jesus:

Mark 1

16As Jesus walked beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen.
17"Come, follow me," Jesus said, "and I will make you fishers of men."
18At once they left their nets and followed him.
19When he had gone a little farther, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John in a boat, preparing their nets.
20Without delay he called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men and followed him.

One has to wonder if giving up a life of fishing with your dad wouldn't be considered living on the fringe in Jesus' time. Jesus got even more specific about this attitude here:

Luke 14:33

In the same way, any of you who does not give up everything he has cannot be my disciple.

Thanks for your enthusiasm, Brian. The more you read about the disciples, I think the more that you will see how much we are like them!

You are not alone.

Ben
