Shari has some good points. I think that you also have to go back to the fact that Jesus' sacrifice was meant to replace the Old Covenant that God made with the descendents of Abraham (the Jews). In that Old Covenant, sins were atoned for through the ritual sacrifice of animals. It was gruesome (read Leviticus :-). During that time, the only proper sacrifice was a blood sacrifice. So, God had to make one last blood sacrifice...that of Jesus.

Beyond that, without a painful and suffering death, Jesus would not have had to have the faith that he did. It was the very fact that his death was so unbearable that gives us greater confidence in Jesus' knowledge of God in heaven.
