I think the general population is about 1-2% bipolar, it seems to be more in the BL forums. You'll want to be aware of the National Depressive/Manic-Depressive Association and any newsgroup with the words "depression" and "manic" or "bipolar" in the name (check your news-server or Deja.com (formerly DejaNews).
