I've skimmed it. I think the truth might be in between the two opinions of a.) a "best friendship" b.) a "sexual relationship". The "romantic tone" of the "my love for you..." part seems to indicate a deep Platonic relationship with a certain passionate undertone like those of some monk's letters or letters of young Erasmus from Rotterdam during the Renaissance. Maybe we've already forgotten about those beautiful "schwärmerische Freundschaften", special friendships with a non-sexual but deep passion drawing people together and sometimes even using erotic allegories. What a pity. Seems I'm the only one who still roots for *this* kind of love. |
