Thanks for some interesting replies - though I remain to be convinced that the specific arguments that I offer (St Paul at Athens and the sumamry of Jesus ministry) as directly relevant to the case don't mean that their pattern is not normative (try again - those things set the pattern we should follow in terms of emphasis). But it is good to be at least looking at these issues, and anything that sends us back to the bible is a good thing! (Shows how I was brung up...) a specific passage which I always find striking - Jesus response to mna amde disasters - in Luke 13 v1- 6 Repent or something worse will happen to you - a comment that he also makes to the man whom he had healed.
