On January 6, Orthodox Christians commemorate the baptism of Christ. I just got back from our evening service, and I'm pumped, so I decided to share some of the songs that are running through my head. Both of these were sung over and over and over again. In a sense, the troparion of a feast is a praise chorus. This one is chanted in Tone One: When thou, O Lord, wast baptized in the Jordan, the worship of the Trinity was made manifest; for the voice of the Father bore witness to thee and called thee his beloved Son. And the Spirit in the form of a dove confirmed the truthfulness of his words. O Christ our God, who hast revealed thyself and hast enlightened the world, glory to thee! The other verse that we chanted again and again is from Galatians 3:27: As many of you as have been baptized in Christ have truly put on Christ. Alleluia! A verse from the Old Testament readings that has stuck with me is Isaiah 12:3. "Therefore with joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation." May we all enter into the joy of the feast! Dirk |
