My dictionary says: A religion or religious sect generally considered to be extremist or false, with its followers often living in an unconventional manner under the guidance of an authoritarian, charismatic leader. Given the history of the Mormons, I'd say that according to this definition they were originally a cult. I view them now as a sect of Christians with peculiar beliefs. They refer to themselves as 'latter-day saints' whereas I'm tempted to characterize them as 'latter-day Gnostics' because they share several important features with the Gnostic sects of early Christian history:
