I've always thought Jesus was angry when he overturned the tables of the money changers in the temple and that it was an anger motivated by love of God. My understanding is that the money changers were engaged in price gouging in their exchange rates for foreign currency to enable religious pilgrims to offer sacrifice at the temple, that their presence wasn't the problem, but their greed.
