Sharing...

I've had quite some week so far. At the weekend I was away on retreat with a group of about 30 other christians I know, and when it came to the "does anyone want to share anything?" bit, I did! Not in character at all! And certainly not to open up about sexuality... I said that all my life I'd struggled with my sexuality, but that sharing it with a few close friends recently had begun to help. Sometimes we don't really know whether we've trusted something like this to God until we've trusted it to others. Since the weekend two of the other 30 have spoken to me and said they too have struggled with sexuality - one man and one woman! I don't know exactly in what way they have struggled, nor do they know in exactly what way I have, but the way is now open to talk some more sometime. Others have also said how they valued me sharing something so openly, and the way it helped them also to share personal stuff themselves. I know this isn't something we all have the opportunity to do, but I wanted to share what a blessing it can be. If you're with a group who are all genuine about their faith, then there should be nothing threatening about it. I don't feel anyone is about to question me... But I also realise that it's quite a unique thing to be in the situation I'm in. Many Christians don't get the chance, and most people who aren't Christians have even less opportunity to share and receive support like this. We really should do all that we can to make it easier for people who struggle to find support, whether christian or not. With love, Jules |
