If I were to choose a lifestyle on the margin of society, and never marry etc., who is my real "family"? Where is my identity in this life? Where will my significant relationships be? What will old age be like? That's not just a question about sexuality; it ranges wider into the whole area of friendship and relationships. It seems to me Jesus had to answer these very questions for himself, coming into this world as a working-class Jew under Roman occupation, not marrying (as far as we know), taking the whole world for his family, coming to grips with his identity as the Son of God, and choosing to fulfill his purpose by giving up his life before he had the chance for old age. I find his example to be a source of endless encouragement. ---Ford |
