Perhaps the notion of creation out of something is to "unspiritual" for the Western Christian mind .

No doubt you're pretty spot on there ;) I submit to said judgement, anyway :) I feel uncomfortable talking about "primordial chaos".

I suppose a better question to ask is whether the details really matter. Whether God brought the universe into being out of chaos or out of nothing, how does that change things?

Or to put it another way, elaborate on what it is precisely that you have against creation from nothing. You spoke briefly of the implication that the "formless earth" was God's doing, but how is that objectionable? (one can argue that God made the earth formless, chaotic, but that was just a step until he reached the final product). Is it, again the implied separation of God from creation that is the problem?


Or is it that you don't object to creation ex nihilo as such, but that you simply consider the alternate translation to be reasonable (which I suppose it is), and are a principled iconoclast? ;)
