I think what you're sharing makes brilliant sense! I must track down this Nouwen fellow some day. The failure of relationships coming from a demand that some one human meet a need beyond our strength. The allowing of ourselves to befriend many, so that in the community of many loved ones our needs are healthily met. What your priest friend was saying about the path of celibacy being found amidst the multiplicity of friendships is, I think, of exquisite significance. So much so, that I might even venture to daringly say celibacy is the way of "holy promiscuity". heh. Drawing life and support from the many, and supporting and giving life to many. Makes sense to me. And it's got to be the way out of the "mad spinster syndrome." F.O.D. |
