On this final Lenten sabbath precedding the Holy Weeks masses I come to you all with an interesting theological question. Whenever one reads the New Testament often we see Jesus going on about "Tax Collectors." Those of you that are familar with first century Judaism, know that "Tax Collector", was the most hated person of the Jew. A hate beyond what we can understand today. I've often tried to understand a hate that deep, reminding me of the segregated south, or the Arabs and Jews, that deep a hate. But the Tax Collector was a despised person, imagine the person you despise most and than multiply it by ten; that is how I understand the hatred the Jews had for the Tax Collectors. But who are these people? Tax Collectors were the extreme outcast, and our friend Jesus PREFERRED to be with them. Our first gospel is attributed to a Tax Collector. We are the modern interpratation of what it means to be a tax collector. We as men who are attracted to young boys, and adolescents are the fringe element. We are the one group left that it is okay to discriminate agaisnt. We are the one group the 1960's could not free. We are the people Jesus would have eaten with. Imagine "And Jesus was reclining at table with pedophiles and the downtrodden, and someone said to him Look he eats with those perverts, and the poor people, and he claims to be the Messiah? And Jesus said "These pedophiles know what it is like to carry their cross and to be loved, for he who is first on this earth will be last, and the last will be first. These pedophiles will have their just reward in heaven for they have carried their HUGE cross." I'll let you all imagine your own version of Heaven, but I'm sure it involves a young boy! Is heaven the place where we get to fullfill what has been denied to us here? I do not know, but I sure as hell hope so. God Speed David |
