Hi, David.

As you commented elsewhere, it's the big four that we turn to in the middle of the night. No matter how intellectually engaging gnostic systems may be, they are no substitute for Jesus Christ.

The idea that Yahweh traps human spirit in the body (because the body can feel very much like a trap), and to escape this illusion or trap we must achieve gnosis and through death escape.

I'm thankful that I've never felt as if my body was a trap. It's true that my sexual lusts have always been of the socially acceptable variety, which may go a long way to explaining the difference between our experiences. However, I know that there are guys here who have discovered a remarkable joy in their sexuality when they accept their orientation and seek to take their love and use it in a way which everyone can view as positive. (I'm really hoping someone will jump in here with a story to back me up.)

Anyway, I'm not likely to be online again until May. Things are normally extremely busy for me at this time of year, but I've had a few days off work this past week because of network problems and a corrupt Oracle database. My boss contacted me today to let me know that we're back up and running for Monday, so I hope to speak with you again in a few weeks.

Incidentally, I know a guy who learned Syriac so he could study the Hexaplaric Psalter. Brilliant man, sound exegete, and a couple of healthy kids to boot. He was attending a Pentecostal church when I knew him.

One other thing -- don't forget that Q is still only a hypothetical document, the Jesus Seminar notwithstanding. If you're reading Funk, Mack, and Crossan, you owe it to yourself to at least check out N.T. Wright, Luke Timothy Johnson, and Ben Witherington III.

Sincerely,
Dirk
