I think dealing with loneliness is very similar to dealing with celibacy. Ford Prefect wrote some very good thoughts about this recently, here and here. The key is to surround your and give yourself to the love of many people, so that all your hopes and dreams are not centred on one person, ready to crash when things change with that person.

Calling them and writing to them can be good.
