About 8 years ago now I outed myself. Not just in front of a chosen friend, or even before a few very close relatives. No, I came clean before an audience of not 1 but 2 cities. I got myself in their local papers. I really didn't know what to expect. As it happens I got myself thown out of a pub, and got dirty stares almost everywhere I went. I know of one occasion where a group of men came to have a little talk with me, but I was out at the time, and they never came back. What surprised me about this experience was the general apathy shown by my fellow citizens. I'd been led to believe that if ever a man like me dared show his face in public, that face would end up pulped and bloodied. Now I'm not saying that never happens. What I'm saying is when push came to shove it never happened to me (story of my life really :) ) Prior to all of this, a friend of mine discovered for himself the "real" me - not that I'd ever tried to hide it. Sure I kept it out of sight, but it could be found to any who came seeking. Now this friend of mine, he was thinking about "turning me in" but something happened that night which changed his mind. I had gone out on a casual "double-date" with my colleague and his girlfriend and his girlfriend's sister, whom I got on with really, really well. So much so that we were playing like kids by the time we got home to my place. Where my friend saw this. He couldn't believe that a so-called "monster" could be so gentle and intimate in a way which to him seemed totally innocent. He never did turn me in as I said. But I did go on to do it to myself. The only people who seemed interested in keeping me away from children were the authorities. Nobody else seemed to bother much. What does this mean? Peace be with you Rex Infinity |
