I can't really agree with you about those words being just metaphorical, because each of them has been fulfilled literally. The book of Acts is sufficient to see that:

cast out demons - Acts 16:18
speak with new tongues Acts 2:4 etc
safe from serpents - Acts 28:3-5
heal the sick - Acts 3:7 etc

All of the signs Jesus mentioned have been found amongst Christians in a literal sense, although not every sign in every Christian.

But your thought of the signs as metaphorical is nevertheless not a bad one, I think, especially for those of us who never see any snakes, let alone handle them.

That's a good thought about Satan as a serpent, and how the Holy Spirit protects us from his venom.
