In reply to more denominational splits... ;) submitted by F.O.D. on May 03 2000 01:04:32

Slightly different liturgical practices aren't quite the same as the schisms experienced in the Protestant world. For instance, the Slavonic practice is to recite the Beatitudes as the second antiphon every Sunday, while the Byzantine practice is to use the hymn "Only begotten Son." (Unfortunately, the adoption of the new calendar by the Orthodox Church in Greece did result in a small schism within that church, but many of the old calendarist bishops have reconciled with the canonical hierarchy in the past few years. On the other hand, the synod of the Orthodox Church in America has allowed each parish to decide which calendar they will follow. I would have thought it confusing for a bishop to visit one city and celebrate the Nativity, and then to celebrate it again thirteen days later in another city, but if they're willing to put up with it, who am I to say anything?)

The reason all Orthodox (except in Finland) observe the Resurrection together no matter which calendar they're on is that it is celebrated on the first Sunday after the Jewish Passover, provided that is after the first full moon after the vernal equinox. (Confused yet?) It's the same day, although a new calendar parish would say we celebrated it on April 30 this year, while an old calendar parish would say it was on the liturgical date of April 17.

All of which is wonderfully off the topic of boylove, but hey, you asked!

And now I think the hockey game is about to start again...
