I'm afraid I don't quite see how your post is a reply to James Jameson. I also don't see how you can expect to be taken seriously when you juxtapose John Dominic Crossan and "the New Testament research community." The indictment leveled against the 19th century "Quest for the Historical Jesus" is just as deadly today as it was then. The "scholars" associated with the Jesus Seminar have each created Christ in their own image. The only "consensus" that exists amongst them is that they all reject the traditional teachings of Church and Scripture.

If you want to talk about the New Testament research community, you should include people such as Ben Witherington III, N. T. Wright, and Raymond Brown. Wright's book, The New Testament and the People of God does a particularly good job of establishing the historical, theological, and sociological contexts of first century Palestine.

I'm also a trifle bemused at your use of the phrase "pre-Easter Church." This is quite simply a contradiction in terms. Theologically speaking, the Church came into existence at Pentecost. Prior to that, the followers of Christ included Galileans, Judeans, Pharisees, Zealots, and even a member of the Sanhedrin. If I were to attempt a generalized description of this motley crew, "Graeco-Jewish syncretists" is hardly the first thing that springs to mind, although it is true that Capernaum was something of a home base for Christ and his disciples.

And finally, the passage translated by Allegro may imply much to the sex-drenched minds of late 20th century Anglophones, but it is not at all clear that this implication has any relation to the truth of the matter.

Sincerely,
Dirk
