Basis of authority - 1

Challenging argument!!

I'm not convinced I agree with all the claims on the list, and want to especially challenge the ones about the legitimacy of prostitution and the concept of women as property, which is a point scoring interpretation of the way that the bible expresses its regulation of family life.

But the general point focuses on the need for the bible to be interpreted appropriately - which in a society that believes that anyone can impose any interpretation they like makes for problems.

Two solutions spring to mind:
1) Tradition - 'what has been believed from the beginning everywhere by everyone'

2) On the basis of 'power not of words' - Paul's claim for authority over the Corinthians was based on his having been the one who bought them to faith, and also his record of ministry.

It is not the modern way to accept external authority - but it is the Christian way!!
