Where the church has completely lost any confidence in its message and plays the game of being nice to everybody. Though you will find elements elsewhere - it is a natural development of Lutheran theology on a bad day, and is also a feature of Catholic and Orthodox malpractice where the outward forms become all that matter, and Pentecostals on a bad day, where the experience is it. It is also an issue in my own church - which is what makes it a sensitive issue. And at the risk of rubbing salt in lots of raw wounds, it is notable in the attitude of most churches in North America to the issue of divorce and remarriage....... (I don't think there are any bishops in the Episcopal church who have been married more than three times :-( |
