Inherently or intrinsically good or evil? In the beginning the creation of Man was good, in fact very good. We were the image of God. The question is, have we remained the image of God, or is the image of God at least hidden within us, obscured as it might be through sin. If we retain the image of God then we retain an inherent goodness, all though that goodness is not "enough" to save us. It is a goodness that is God's original blessing or gift to us, that we have refused, refuted, turned away from. Therefore since all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God, then all are in need of salvation. All though the original goodness is not enough to save us, it is nonetheless an indication that we are savable, and worth being saved. "For God so loved the world..."

I have never believed that the Calvinistic argument for total depravity has been of much use to me. It is enough to say that I need to be saved, that I cannot save myself, and that there is One who can and is saving me. His name is Jesus, and He is the Christ of God.
