Your point about the protestant tendency to ignore the wisdom of the fathers is well made.

I'm sure you don't believe that ALL laws have been revoked.

Depends what you mean by "ALL laws"...

Either Paul is preaching two different gospels, or your anti-nomian interpretation of Colossians has something wrong with it.

The real explanation is that I didn't fully expound what I was thinking, but made the controversial comment to get the point across. The real point I want to make is not that there NO laws, but rather, that all the laws are fulfilled in the sense that Jesus speaks of in Matt 22:36-40, to love. That is, the "list of laws" is cancelled in the sense that Paul writes about in Colossians, and there only remains the abiding law to love. Which I suppose is a lot more difficult than following a simple list of does and dont's. As Paul goes on to say, "Now you must rid yourselves of these things: anger, rage, malice...and clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility".

I believe this point is consistent with the broad stroke of the Gospel, which is the fulfilling of the Law through Jesus' sacrifice, freeing us to maintain the Law in our hearts, rather than via written lists external from our hearts. Jer. 31:33,34.

As Paul puts it, again talking to the Galatians about this very issue of the law, in a similar as he did to the Roman that you quoted, "You, my brothers were called to be free. But do not use this freedom to indulge your sinful nature...The entire law is summed up in a single commandmant: 'Love your neigbour as yourself'".

So, ultimately my point is to warn people away from petty list-keeping, and to keep attention on the greater principle of the law to love. In love, the fulfilment of the law that you mentioned is found.

"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness and self-control. Against such things there is no law."

Respects,

Fod

ps. what does "antinomian" mean?
