Here's the logic of it:

1. Bad popular theodicy. God is supposed to be loving, but He let this disaster I really care about happen (someone died, there was a tsunami, etc.). I'm either very disappointed in him or I can't believe if he exists he would allow that. (Actually, God, having made a creation that possesses enough freedom to make us living creatures with free will, wouldn't be loving if he so manipulated everything that it all became an automaton again. He can respond to prayers without putting an end to worldly mortality or making the cosmos a puppet show.)

2. Social pressure about self-control. All those cynics I know belittle me for attributing control of my life to an uncaring and/or nonexistent God. I am uncool because I'm afraid of taking the bull by the horns myself.

3. Exuberance. YAY. I am gonna be in control! Whee, no God.

4. Angst and spiritual loneliness. Oh my god (last word now empty). I am scared and it hasn't always gone well and i need to f-ing relax!!!

5. Compensation. Extreme physical pleasure relaxes me! I forget it all! I am drunk again, oh well! Let's f---!

There's another series leading back to God again.
