I think that the bible points towards this too; that is if the bible is to be taken as a divinely inspired scripture. However, and we all know this, annihilation is just another way of saying genocide.

The Jews did nothing to deserve the holocaust. However, we have all sinned against God, and sin has consequences. God mercifully made a way out for us, through Jesus. Beyond that, justice is required. Annihilation (unlike "eternal conscious torment") is a just punishment for sin. It is, essentially, the ultimate death penalty.
