“I discipline my body and bring it into subjection” 1 Cor 9:27

How does a Christian “discipline” his body in such a way as to develop the kind of self-mastery Paul is talking about here?

I think of several passages that constitute things we need on a regular basis to help us maintain self-control. “Disciplines” as they were.
The first is the process of mind renewal. Romans 12:2 “be transformed by the renewing of your mind”. As we meditate on Scripture, hear it preached and discuss it in fellowship our minds are washed with pure water and God Himself teaches us.
The Next is “being filled with the Spirit” Eph 5:18. Prayer seen as fellowship with God... as communion with him... as a time to get full of Him. As Rom 13:14 says, “put on the Lord Jesus Christ and make no provision for the flesh’s lusts.”
Then Confession... a real toughy for some of us. To go and confess our faults to one another and seek prayer and help when we are struggling... some things we just can’t do on our own. James 5:16. For us boylovers having another Christian boylover we can share stuff with can be invaluable in this regard.... praise God for the internet.
To this we need daily encouragement from each other (Heb 3:13) and constant provoking to love and good works (Heb 10:24).
It’s all very relational... we are such social creatures.
I think if we are left on our own for too long we start getting into trouble.

Prayer
Father, you ask us to live good, holy and pure lives. You have made us socially dependant to achieve this. Help us to have good fellowship with you and with each other that we may always make our priorities, Your priorities and live a life pleasing to You and a blessing to others. We ask this in Jesus name.
Amen.
