Your post seems to cover two areas of art: graphic arts and music. To the Orthodox our approach to both are different yet united by the same philosophy.
We have icons though not stauary but our use of music is restricted to use in the Divine Liturgy, singing portions, chanting or intoning other parts. Secular music and hymns as found in Protestant churches are not used.
The holy icons are mystical connections to those depicted. Music, such as hymns and Christian rock, is seen as an appeal to the emotions which is the other side of the intellect. We seek the "core," the divine image/icon of the Holy Trinity within each person through what you might consider "dull" music. But as the icons have a connection to what is beyond us, so too our music seeks to connect and strengthen that connection to the "core".
