I am definitely a firm believer in volunteering with organizations that aim to help children. I believe serving children directly is a very natural way for many BLs to serve. In fact, there are things in the works for this forum along those lines (stay tuned).

I am, however, hesitant to recommend someone use that as a way to escape depression. I believe it is far more beneficial to both the YF and oneself if one is mentally and emotionally stable. One of the most important functions of the adult in a BL/YF relationship is to be a role model; what kind of role model can you be if the life you are modeling is a sad and lonely one?

That's why I emphasize getting your own life in order first and being aware that there is most certainly hope for a YF in the future. When you are ready, you will know. Either that, or one will miraculously appear out of the blue as so often happens whether you are ready or not.
