In reply to Anecdote based evidence is valueless posted by Eldad on 2010-07-04 10:20:36, Sunday

If you had been critiquing a piece of argumentative or persuasive writing then arguing about the lack of evidence would be correct; but you are critiquing a piece of expository writing and as such the only valid arguments must revolve around whether it succeeded or failed in informing. If it successfully informed you about the existence of these people and their lifestyle, then it succeeded. You don't need evidence when you aren't trying to mount a defense of any thesis.

Anecdotes are of very little value if you are trying to use them as evidence of anything other than the existence of at least a small number of cases. But anecdotes are of great value if you are interested in learning more about how other people live, how they think, how they deal with certain issues, how their life experience differs from your own, etc.

I think that was the point of the article back when it was written; to make a wider gay population aware of the existence of this small subset of their movement and the incongruence between the lifestyle they actually live and the portrayal of that lifestyle in society at large.

My point in posting it here was very similar. I was not trying to make a case in favor of sexual relationships with boys, nor was I promoting the view that such relationships can be healthy or moral. That article is very effective at exploring a lifestyle that exists in our society and that I think many people here have had no exposure to before. In other forums you do get some exposure to that way of thinking, but we just don't have that kind of variety on this forum. I think having exposure to a wide range of views and being aware of all the various ways of dealing with an issue is a good thing. Thus, I thought sharing the article here would be of value.
