I tend to agree with your point about calling someone you only see occasionally a YF. I was only addressing your comparing one to a girlfriend. However, perhaps Cat considers any boy he deeply cares about a YF. I personally wouldn't convey the title of YF to someone I have very limited contact with. But it's not like there's a definition for it registered with Webster. I say tomAto, but you may say tomAHHto.
