In the end Jake does end up with a loving family, with Eddie and Susannah.

Having Jake go on as the Gunslinger in the end would have been nice and lovely but it really would not have been Stephen King. Well some of his books end that way but many do not.

I think many people were dissatisfied with the ending of the series but really there was no perfect way to end it. The ending really became about redemption for Roland. There is no way of knowing how many times he had gone in a loop to do the same quest the same way but in the end he learned something and the next time may be the last or bring his long long quest to an end.
