Wow, thanks for letting me know about Jason Ricci, gay blues performer extraordinaire. Completely new to me. ¿Have you downloaded the shows he's posted as free downloads at http://www.archive.org/search.php?query=collection:etree%20AND%20/metadata/creator:%22Jason%20Ricci%20And%20New%20Blood%22 I was going to point out the two people I think are closeted teenboy-lovers of the gay-positive rock music scene, the great Tom Robinson (2-4-6-8 Motorway, [Sing if you're] Glad to be Gay, War Babies, Atmospherics [Listen to the Radio]) and Jon Ginoli, the driving genius of the 90s gay punk band Pansy Division. Tom, you can tell from his lyrics over time, was clearly having difficulty having relationships with considerably younger guys, and he ultimately took a typical BL solution: he surprised himself by falling for a cute and very boyish girl (subject of his song "Tomboy") and now lives heterosexually while still considering himself openly gay. I've known any number of TBLs who had access to that type of bisexuality. Most other gay guys don't, so they were very surprised and in some cases offended by Tom's change in relationship status. Goes to show how the world needs more understanding of boylovers. Jon started off as a very young performer, so maybe all the voluptuous teens on his album covers are just the people you'd expect him to like at that age. I got a very distinct TBL vibe from him, though, and he was also running into the classic TBL/chickenhawk relationship troubles - basically being brushed off by rebellious semi-boyfriends who were very conscious of their younger and cooler status. Actually, I think people who acknowledge themselves as TBLs and expect their 17 yo bfs to behave like teens are less likely to suffer what the unconscious guys who think of themselves as gay do -- basically, that they wish their lovely lover wouldn't be so immature, restless, and more often than not, sexually experimental with a few of the many alternate admirers who seek their attention. Anyways, there is now a great corpus of rock music about all these 20-something / teen-something same-sex relationship highs and lows, courtesy of these two gentlemen. For a heart-rending and quite rock-bluesy rendition of the woes, you need only listen to Tom Robinson's UK hit song War Babies - the only song I know of where a man's complaints to his truculent late-teenboy lover became a radio hit. Of course, you have to know the rest of his material to know that he has a boy on his mind. But he was very well known in the UK so I think most listeners understood. |
