I don't agree that overpopulation is a global problem to begin with. Sure, more people consume more resources, but those increases in consumption spur increases in supply. Thus, the question of how to control the population level becomes moot since I don't see it as a problem to begin with.
The food problem is not a supply problem. We do not have a scarcity of food. The world food supply can best be described as an overabundance. There is enough food on the planet to make every man, woman, and child on Earth obese. World hunger is caused by a distribution problem. The food exists, it's just not getting to the places that need it most. Likewise, the problems with pollution are not the result of too many people, they are the result of decades of reliance on fossil fuels and ignorance of the consequences. The solution isn't to cut down on the number of people, but to transition to an infrastructure that is less dependent on environmentally harmful technologies and leverages environmentally friendly alternatives. All of these problems have root causes that get ignored if you blame it all on the myth of overpopulation. |
