Where The Wild Things Are...and...

Yes...it is finally at my local theater. "Where The Wild Things Are", a movie adaption of the popular children's book by Maurice Sendak. This should be quite the movie. I am even going to ask to have the official poster. I will even buy it if they want. And of course I will have a revue on this movie next week.

Another movie I just recently watched and was pleasently surprised with was a true golden oldie. Recently our library has been showing classic movies once a month. This month the movie was "Mr. Smith Goes To Washington". I had never seen this movie before and I thought it was worth mentioning here in the forum. The movie was made back in 1939, the same year as "The Wizard Of OZ" and "Gone With The Wind". A very young James Stewart plays the leading role, Mr. Smith. It is the story about how a naive man is appointed to the U.S. Senate to fill a vacancy. When he gets there his plans collide with a pollitically corrupt faction, and he must "go to war" in the Senate to save his plans as well as his own job. If this sounds a little boring to you, then please note that his plans are to build a national boy's camp. Before he became a Senator, Mr. Smith was a very popular leader of a local boys club and kind of a local hero as well. Because of this, there are many scenes of him relating to boys. Especially interesting are the scenes of the Floor of the U.S. Senate, with all the young page boys running around, and with many, many fine examples of how government was run back then. By the end of the movie, it is the boys from his home town who help save the day.

Jimmie Stewart won the Academy Award for that year for best actor, and in my opinion, the man certainly deserved it. Check this older movie out for a real treat. This is acting at it's best, and a great story with great directing. (And lots of boys for those of us who like that kind of thing...gosh, who could that be?) It is in black and white but don't let that frighten you, I was just as glued to this movie as I have ever been to any excellent film. Check it out.
