There is another way. Matthew 6:16: WHEN you fast... not if you fast.
Likewise there are numerous times in Scriptures where prayer and fasting are tied together. Denying the body what it naturally wants helps to break its connection to the world.
Orthodoxy has a system of fasting to accomplish this.
