how about thinking through how he must be feeling on the edge of a new risky life? it cant be that he's forgotten it all, it's just that it's in the past now and he has to move on. yes I can see how in a way you are doing this but do you have to be so hard on yourself (and him)?
accepting change is hard I know. couldnt you talk it through with him? kind of no pressure talk?
