This reminds me of an excellent made-for-TV movie, "The Interrogation of Michael Crowe", which is based on a true story. It is about a 14-year-old (Michael Crowe) whom -- the police decide, on nothing much more than a hunch -- brutally killed his 12-year-old sister (in what otherwise looks like a home break in). They then proceed to interrogate the poor boy relentlessly until he confesses to the murder -- at that point, so confused and mentally broken, that he no longer knows whether he killed her or not; he just knows he doesn't remember doing so.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0330452/ Excellent film -- and very sobering. I have always been someone who has believed in the power of the truth, and that it's always best to just be honest and "put it all out there". Now, though, if I were ever questioned by the police about anything, I wouldn't say a word. It's sad, because the police, I believe, are generally good people. But you just can't take a chance.
