The end of the movie is heart-wrenching to be sure, so it is probably the same as the book. So my guess is that your eyes will be beet-red at the end of the opera OR the movie. You should see the movie. It was made in 1974 I believe, so you should be able to find a copy somewhere; it is out on DVD. I think I will be buying it because I rent it so often.
