Once in a while a movie comes along that shows me just how much I love foreign and independent movies. I watched "Vitus" last night and just fell in love with this film. It is a German movie (at least I think it was German) about a highly gifted young boy who is a genious. His parents discover this when, at his fifth birthday party, he is given a toy keyboard and after hearing Happy Birthday he begins to play the song on the keyboard almost note perfect...with both hands. He quickly becomes bored with school and his parents have to put him in High School at age 12. And even that is no challenge for the boy. He also becomes a brilliant pianist and his mother begins to pressure him to study the piano more. This is when he decides he wants to be a "normal" person instead.

This movie is so well made. From the flawless acting of both child and adult actors, to the directing which is perfect, this movie is wonderful. Vitus is a boy who is brilliant, and yet decides he wants to experience love with those who are close to him instead of always striving to try to meet their expectations of him. He has a sweet and wonderful relationship with his grandfather that put tears in my eyes. Has anyone seen this movie? If not, then please see it, you will just love it! It came out in 2006 and the language of the film is German but it has English subtitles.
