I know.

That's why I posted all of the verses that have been translated as "lust" in the old testament and all of the ones from the New Testament up until I got tired of cut and pasting.

As anyone who knows more than one language can attest to, knowing the definition of all of the words in a paragraph is hardly useful. Without knowledge of the language as a whole or the context in which things are said, and without an understanding of the perspective they are written from, knowing the definitions of words alone is of little value. Thus splitting hairs over the precise definition of the exact word used is a pointless exercise. Far more useful is to see its usage in context and infer from that what the writer meant.

When placed in context, we can see that those things translated as "lust" in the bible, almost without fail, are used along with references to prostitution, adultery, or sexual interest. Apart from the verse about lusting after ancestral idols, every other verse uses it in that way. Thus it's fairly safe to say that the way the term lust is used in the bible is very close to how we use it today. It appears to be used to describe the root cause of sexual sin.

Personally, I view lust as being similar to greed. As with greed, lust is also the root of all kinds of evil. It is a force that can drive you towards being a better person, or towards your demise. I don't believe lust is sinful, it can't be because it is something you have no control over. But I believe that living a life ruled by lust is sinful and destructive.
