"Biblical Wrongness"... hmmm
I'd have to say yes and no. There is no biblical sanction against polygamy... some of the fathers of our faith were polygamous: Abraham, Jacob, David, Solomon etc... However I agree that polygamy is not the biblical ideal. That an exclusive couple of two people (and from my point of view... opposite gendered people)is the ideal. When I was studying we looked at polygamy and got some testimonies from people in cultures where polygamy was practiced. Many of these testimonies were very positive... and since I've long forgotten the sources you only have my hearsay... but one that stuck out in my mind was of a man who's brother had died and the tradition was that he take responsibility for his wife even though he was already married. This man said, "I wasn't going to leave her to starve"... as extreme poverty was the fate of widows who didn't remarry in his country. One of the wives testified that she was very happy that her husband had taken a second wife as it increased her social status in the community and meant that the more menial household tasks would be passed on to the new "2nd" wife. Interesting subject. Personally I don't think polygamy can really work in the west as males and females have too much social "equality" to endure it. Blessings Cat |
