Check Kittel and Check Vine.
Kittel goes into detail about the non scriptural uses of the term "eikon" as well as how it was used in and during the writing of Old and New Tesaments.
Vine deals with "eikon" during the New Testament but agrees with Kittel.

The Orthdoox Study Bible agrees with Kittel and Vine.
